The Springfield Higher Pedagogy Department is committed to preparing effective teachers for the 21st century who will demonstrate strong critical thinking skills, knowledge of curriculum, and reflective instruction practices. Our graduates will exist prepared to create dynamic learning environments in which teaching and cess meet the needs of students. The department strives to strengthen partnerships with the customs and foster teaching that empowers students, promotes equity, celebrates variety and demonstrates a delivery to the humanics philosophy.

Graduate study in the Education Department is designed to enable educators to earn their initial educational activity license or to enhance their pedagogy skills in order to ameliorate serve Pre Grand - 12 schools, early childhood education centers, and other educational institutions. Interdisciplinary report characterizes the teacher preparation programs, providing adult students with greater noesis and understanding of their profession, enhancing their ability to piece of work with youth and their families. Educator Licensure Information
For those seeking an educator license, the course work volition encompass the competencies required for a teacher under Massachusetts licensure regulations. Graduate candidates may be required to complete prerequisites depending on their undergraduate study, and so that they can satisfy the subject matter knowledge requirements of our canonical programs. Standards for Practicum Placement

  4. Obtain a class of "B" or improve in designated methods courses:
    Early Babyhood - EDUC 555, 627, and 654;
    Elementary - EDUC 627, 652 and 654;
    Secondary - EDUC 628, 640, 671, 675 and 685;
    Special Education - EDUC 642, 673 and EDUC 651
  5. Demonstrate the personal characteristics (dispositions) needed to become an educator (for instance, responsible, dependable, hard working, professional, committed to the field of education, etc.)
  6. Recommendation for practicum placement by department.

Educational Studies Concentration


Educational Studies is a flexible programme designed to meet the needs of individuals who want to continue their education for professional development or to change careers. Students can choose to follow Plan A (K.Ed.), Plan B (M.Southward.) or Plan C (K.S.). Students have the choice of designing a program (Focus Option) in consultation with their counselor (i.e., experiential education, instructional technology, school athletics, etc.), or choosing a concentration that leads to Massachusetts Educator Initial Licensure in Early Childhood Teaching, Elementary Education, Secondary Educational activity or Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities ane.

All of these licensure programs are State of Massachusetts approved.

i Applicants to the teacher of Special Teaching Initial Licensure Programme demand to take a current license every bit an Uncomplicated or Secondary teacher or exist simultaneously enrolled in the Elementary or Secondary Initial Licensure Programme.

Early Childhood Education (PreK-two) Concentration


Teacher of Students With and Without Moderate Disabilities (PreK-2)

The Graduate Level Initial Licensure Program in Early Babyhood Education prepares early babyhood educators to assume teaching positions in public schools, kid care programs, private preschools and kindergartens, early intervention programs, family support and domicile visiting programs and inclusive early on childhood settings. Elementary Pedagogy (i-6) Concentration

Special Education


Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (TSMD) (PreK-8 or five-12)

The Special Instruction Program prepares teachers to work effectively with students with balmy and moderate disabilities. The programme offers a combination of courses that lead to the Initial Licensure every bit a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme provides a broad frame of reference for the students as they develop a foundation in the theoretical, historical, social and political foundations of special education. A special accent is placed on: Reading and Language Arts pedagogy; Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks; assessment of physical, social, emotional, intellectual and social evolution of children and adolescents; educational terminology for students with balmy and moderate disabilities; preparation, implementation and evaluation of Individualized Education Programs; pattern and modification of curriculum, instructional materials, and educational environments for students with moderate disabilities; behavior management and transitional assistance for students with mild and moderate disabilities; services provided by other agencies and federal and country laws and regulations pertaining to special education.

Prerequisites:
A Massachusetts Initial License as an Uncomplicated or Secondary Teacher or simultaneously enrolled in the Springfield College Graduate Initial Licensure Programme at that level and a grade in child development.  A transcript review will determine whether there are additional prerequisites.

Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure Required:
All students in the Special Instruction Graduate Initial Licensure Plan are required to laissez passer the post-obit exams:

  • Communication and Literacy Skills exam (prior to practicum)
  • Content Area examination depends on class level (prior to practicum)
  • Foundations of Reading exam (prior to practicum)

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study


Special Teaching Licensure


The Certificate of Advance Graduate Study (CAGS) in Education is provided for those graduate students who wish additional study across the main'south programme and intend to qualify for Special Education Licensure. Students must complete a minimum of 32 graduate credits for the CAGS.

Prerequisites:

  • Earned primary's degree in Education or related content field
  • Initial teacher license at the simple or secondary level or concurrent enrollment in the Simple or Secondary Initial Licensure Program
  • A transcript review will determine whether in that location are additional prerequisites
